Job Details

  • Position: Locum Tenens Nurse Practitioner – Neurosurgery (Hospital-based, Day Shift)
  • Weekly Estimated Pay: $5,040 – $5,400 (competitive locum tenens pay)
  • Location: Oakland, CA 94602 (Oakland / Bay Area / Northern California)
  • Setting: Hospital – Neurosurgery Department (inpatient & outpatient)
  • Schedule: 4 x 12-hour day shifts (07:00 – 17:00), full-time
  • Duration: 26 weeks (Start: 09/07/2026 – End: 03/08/2027)
  • Support: 2 other APPs (Mon–Thu), 1 other APP (Fri), solo APP (Sat–Sun); attendings and RNs available
  • Patient Volume: Inpatient census: 8–15/day; Outpatient census: ~20/day (shared with attending)
  • EMR: Epic (experience with Epic preferred)

Required Qualifications

  • Active California Nurse Practitioner license (or eligible to obtain California NP license)
  • BLS and ACLS certifications required
  • Minimum 1–2 years of neurosurgery, neuro-trauma, or acute care NP/APP experience
  • Experience in both inpatient and outpatient neurosurgery settings preferred
  • Level 1 trauma and neuro-trauma experience required
  • Ability to perform bedside procedures such as surgical drain removal; other procedures performed with attending
  • Excellent clinical documentation skills (Epic experience strongly preferred)
  • Timely communication and responsiveness required for privileging and onboarding
  • Must meet facility medical and onboarding requirements (immunizations, drug testing, physical exam)

Preferred

  • RNFA certification or first-assist experience for OR support
  • Previous locum tenens or travel NP experience
  • Familiarity with multidisciplinary neurocritical care teams

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive neurosurgical patient care across inpatient and outpatient settings as a Neurosurgery NP / APP
  • Manage neuro-trauma cases and coordinate care with neurosurgeons, critical care, and nursing teams
  • Perform bedside procedures including drain removal and assist with postoperative management
  • Support operating room activities when needed (first-assist preferred but not required)
  • Document all patient interactions, plans, and orders accurately in Epic EMR
  • Deliver high-quality, patient-centered care to a diverse population in Oakland and the Bay Area
  • Maintain clear communication with attendings, APPs, RNs, and ancillary staff to ensure safe, coordinated care
