Job Requirements / Qualifications

  • Active California Physician (MD or DO) license required
  • Minimum 1 year of experience in a hospital-based or acute care setting; prior physician advisor, utilization review, case management, or physical medicine experience preferred
  • Background in Physical Medicine, PM&R, rehabilitation medicine, or a related specialty
  • Experience with utilization management, medical necessity determinations, and LOS management
  • Strong communication, leadership, and physician engagement skills
  • Proven ability to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including case management, nursing, care coordination, and administration
  • Detail-oriented, proactive, and comfortable operating in a high-accountability clinical environment

Key Responsibilities

  • Act as clinical liaison between medical staff, care coordination, nursing, utilization review, and hospital administration
  • Review and manage high length-of-stay (LOS) inpatient cases, prioritizing cases >10 days to optimize discharge planning and throughput
  • Support utilization management and make medical necessity determinations in accordance with payer and regulatory guidelines
  • Partner with treating physicians to remove barriers to discharge, coordinate durable medical equipment (DME), and streamline transitions of care
  • Lead initiatives to reduce readmissions, improve inpatient flow, and enhance quality and compliance metrics
  • Participate in daily multidisciplinary rounds and follow up on action items to ensure timely care progression
  • Review approximately 180 inpatient cases daily to ensure clinical appropriateness, documentation accuracy, and compliance
  • Provide clinical and operational leadership across departments to influence best practices and outcomes for rehabilitation and acute care populations
