Key Qualifications / Job Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED required
- Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) highly preferred; must obtain by June 28 if not already held
- 3+ years of high-volume retail pharmacy technician experience required — pharmacy technician jobs experience
- 1+ year prior authorization (prior auth) experience required
- Advanced competency in pharmacy technician skills (Technician I & II roles)
- Proficiency with Microsoft-based technology applications and electronic medical records (EMR)
Primary Responsibilities
- Work with relative independence under pharmacist supervision to complete prescription prior authorization requests and insurance authorization workflows
- Identify and select appropriate prior authorization forms based on pharmacy benefit investigations and EMR resources
- Accurately enter patient demographics, prescription, prescriber, and insurance information into EMR and pharmacy systems
- Use plan criteria questions to guide chart data mining for authorization requests and support medication access
- Maintain metric-driven communications and thorough documentation within the EMR for tracking prior authorizations
- Submit, monitor, and follow up on prior authorization requests within required timeframes
- Communicate submissions, follow-ups, approvals, and denials to outpatient pharmacies, clinical staff, and provider teams
- Maintain accurate internal records of prior authorizations and support claims/appeal documentation as needed
- Collaborate with outpatient pharmacies, clinical pharmacists, and provider teams to resolve coverage barriers and improve patient outcomes
- Stay current on ICD-10 codes, medications, formulary changes, and disease state–specific resources
- Demonstrate professionalism, serve as a role model for other technicians, and promote patient-centric solutions
