PICU Travel Registered Nurse (RN) – Pediatric Cardiac ICU Assignment in Tacoma, WA

  • Hours: 36 hours per week
  • Shift Duration: 12-hour nights
  • Shift Times: 7:00 p.m.–7:30 a.m. or 7:00 a.m.–7:30 p.m., based on unit needs
  • Weekend Rotation: Every other weekend
  • On-Call: No scheduled call; low-census standby may be used when needed
  • Patient Population: Pediatric and young adult patients, with care extending up to age 30 in rare circumstances

Pediatric Critical Care RN Requirements

  • At least 2 years of PICU nursing experience, including a minimum of 1 year in a PCICU setting
  • Current Registered Nurse (RN) license eligible for practice in Washington
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
  • Current Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification
  • Demonstrated experience caring for cardiac, respiratory, surgical, neurological, and medically complex pediatric patients
  • Proficiency with ventilator and tracheostomy management, suctioning, chest tubes, central lines, feeding tubes, Foley catheters, epidural and PCA pumps, and medication drips
  • Ability to perform sterile and aseptic techniques, dressing changes, central-line blood draws, peripheral lab draws, and patient discharge education
  • Epic experience preferred
  • Previous ECMO, peritoneal dialysis, CRRT, or Prismax experience is preferred but not required
  • Strong critical-thinking, time-management, adaptability, communication, and teamwork skills
  • First-time travel nurses are welcome to apply

PICU Travel Nurse Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive nursing care to critically ill pediatric and PCICU patients in a high-acuity environment
  • Care for patients with congenital heart defects, fresh open-heart procedures, post-cardiac catheterization needs, congestive heart failure, cardiomyopathy, myocarditis, and post-cardiac arrest conditions
  • Monitor and manage patients requiring high-flow oxygen, CPAP, BiPAP, ventilators, tracheostomies, and advanced respiratory support
  • Care for post-operative and medical-surgical patients, including those with appendectomies, feeding tubes, fresh tracheostomies, bowel obstructions, fractures, VP shunts, and other neurological conditions
  • Administer medications and manage drips, epidurals, PCA pumps, chest tubes, central lines, feeding tubes, and urinary catheters
  • Perform comprehensive assessments, recognize changes in patient condition, and escalate concerns promptly
  • Support patients receiving chemotherapy and those with complex medical or traumatic conditions
  • Collaborate with physicians, advanced practice providers, respiratory therapists, specialists, families, and the multidisciplinary care team
  • Float to Med-Surg, the Emergency Department, NICU support, or sitter assignments when required by staffing needs
  • Maintain accurate documentation, participate in discharge planning, and provide clear education to patients and families
